7. India During Maurya Period
Short Notes:
1. Foreign Invasion:
✔At the time of the rise of the Magadha empire, Daryush, the Iranian Emperor invaded India & conquered Gandhar and Sindh Province.
✔This led to the development of diplomatic and later trade relations between India and Iran.

2. The Invasion by Alexander:
✔The Greek King Alexander defeated the Iranian empire & then invaded India.
✔Alexander had to face fierce opposition from the Indian Kings.
✔He had also to face the problem of rebellion.
✔He decided to go to back to Greece after deputing his Satraps and officers to administer the conquered Indian territories.
✔While returning to the Greece, he died at Babylon in 323 BC, after Alexander's death there were rebellions in the Indian territories as well as power struggle among the Greek officials.
Selecus Nicator declared himseld as the king of Babylon.
3. Realations between India and Greece.
✔Trade and communication between India and Greece increased.
✔Greek Sculpture influenced Indian sculpture and paved the way to the ✔Gandhara school of art.
✔Indian kings also started mining coins in Greek style.
4. Chandragupta Maurya:
✔Chandragupta Maurya ended the tyrannical rule of Dhananada and founded the Maurya Rule in Magadha in around 325 BA.
✔His rule extended upto Avanti in Madhya Pradesh to  Saurashtra in the west.
✔He defeated Selecus Nicator, the great king of Babylon and annexed ✔Kabul, Herat and Kandahar.
Selecus Nicator sent his ambassador Megasthenese to the court of Chandragupta.
✔The capital of Chandragupta was Pataliputra, the present day Patna in Bihar.
✔He was succeeded by his son Bindusara.
✔Bindusara was succeeded by his son Ashoka around 273 BC.

✔Chandragupta was succeeded by his son Bindusara.
✔Ashoka succeeded to the throne in 273 BCE after the death of Bindusara.
✔Before he came yo throne, he was appointed the governor of Takshashila and Ujjain.
✔He launched a campaign against the State of Kalinga.
✔Emperor Ashoka conquered Kalinga.
Ashoka's empire extended from ✔Afganistan in the northwest and Nepal in the North to Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in the south, and from Bengal in the east to Saurashtra in the west.
[  ] The Kalinga War:
✔Ashoka was deeply moved by the bloodshed of the Kalinga war.
✔He decided never to wage a war again.
✔He came to believe that truth, non-violence,  compassion and forgiveness were the important values.
✔Ashoka wanted to spread these teachings among the common people and therefore.
✔He had edicted pillars and stone inscriptions.
✔Brahmi script was uses to write.
He is referred to as 'Devanampiya Piyadasi' (Beloved of the Gods and he who looks on with Affection.)
